April 2003Just one of "The Guys" Thanks to Apple.com you can check out the trailer to Sigourney Weaver's latest film "The Guys" at http://www.apple.com/trailers/focus_features/the_guys/. Hulk smashes USF's new EGB show Long-time GBHQ contributor "The Hulk" weighed in his opinions of the Universal Studios Florida "Extreme Ghostbusters" show to me recently: "The show has very little to do with Ghostbusters aside from the fact that the 'stars' of the show call themselves Ghostbusters and wear Ghostbusters suits. There is no 'set' for this show, they just set up a few speakers in front of the false NY background in the New York section of USF. Essentially, this is supposed to be a forum about Ghostbuster franchising, but before it begins, Beetlejuice Shows up. Beetlejuice is the USF Rock&Roll guy, he has his own rock and roll show with the other Universal Monsters. Anyway, what happens is the Ghostbusters drive up in Ecto-1, and hop out of the car. They get on stage, the PKE meter detects a Ghost and Beetlejuice shows up. They have no proton packs, and since there is no special effects set up, they just run after Beetlejuice. The Ghostbusters, the experts in paranormal elimination, seem to think the best way to deal with the ghost with the most is to chase him around on stage. Just be glad these aren't Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston--just some guys who don't represent any real characters. Anyway, Beetlejuice uses his magic on them and they fall under his control and for the next few minutes, they lip-synch two dozen songs from Motown music, to Madonna's Material Girl, to N'Sync (shudder). I mean, it's pretty good choreography, but it has nothing to do with Ghostbusters. And then, it's over. They pat themselves on the back for being so talented, and the show is over and Beetlejuice tells an audience expecting, I don't know, the ghostbusters to bust him(!), to leave. The Ghostbusters stay behind, sign some autographs, but that's it. So, the once-proud name that was Ghostbusters is reduced to, what Beetlejuice in the show called them, "four lip-syncing idiots." Very disapointing. I was very exicted when in the guidemap they said the Ghostbusters were going to have a show, but it disapointed me that they were devolved into a boyband in a show that could've been made to fit any sort of characters in place of Ghostbusters. " Hmm... at least they're still around the lot. I had heard someone was hurt by the proton packs and this is the reason that the cast no longer wears them. Thanks, Hulk! Forget it, Harry... it's pilot season. Ghostbusters alumn are showing up all over the pilot tapings this season. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Annie Potts is starring in a new comedy series, NBC's "Stuck in the Middle with You" also starring Timothy Busfield about parents and their kids struggling to stay a part of the middle class. Also Peter MacNicol stars in CBS' Crazylove about a fortysomething neurotic husband and his working wife adopting a Chinese baby girl. Will they get picked up? Stay tuned. Ghostbusters in new starter box set... CTHV is trying to snag more DVD users, and in order to do so they have a pack of four of their "popular" movies in a starter box set that retails for around $40. You can view the box set (which includes the original Ghostbusters, Sleepless in Seattle, Mask of Zorro, and Godzilla) over on Amazon here. Thanks Dark Lotus for the tip. |
